Festival Reader

The 52nd edition of steirischer herbst explored the tension between pleasure and catastrophe in installations, performances, and talks. With our festival reader A Pleasant Apocalypse: Notes from the Grand Hotel Abyss (published by Hatje Cantz in May 2020), it is possible to delve even deeper into the structures of hedonism in ever-more apocalyptic times.

Video Archive

Take a look back at steirischer herbst ’19 in our Video Archive. Besides a film on the big Opening Extravaganza, the archive brings together various documentaries and interviews focusing on many of the Grand Hotel Abyss productions and installations, and even features a number of film works commissioned by the festival.

steirischer herbst ’19

steirischer herbst ’19 ended on 19 October. 35 commissioned productions by more than 40 artists and artist collectives formed a densely woven narrative on the theme of Grand Hotel Abyss.

Aside from the core program, the festival was accompanied by a rich Parallel Program composed mainly of local institutions as well as by musikprotokoll and STUBENrein—both festivals within the festival.

We wholeheartedly thank all participants of steirischer herbst ’19.
