Ein Krieg in der Ferne (A War in the Distance)
Ekaterina Degot talks about steirischer herbst ’22, whose centerpiece is the exhibition at Neue Galerie Graz. Historical and contemporary works are juxtaposed in a subjectively curated show. They deal with the conflicts and wars that took place in and around Austria and Styria in the past centuries and were reflected in art in a direct or indirect way.
The lecture addresses the curatorial process, discusses the selection of some works, and offers a summary of the festival.

Curating the City: What Is Public about Public Art?
Mirela Baciak asks how art can exist outside the safe space of a museum. How can the city be viewed through a curatorial lens? The lecture focuses on curatorial practices in so-called public space. It looks at historical and contemporary examples of artistic and curatorial projects—and discusses what kind of public sphere they create. In addition, using examples from steirischer herbst, Baciak analyzes the importance of research, sensitivity to place and context, and the practical challenges (such as permissions) of realizing projects in public space.
