About

Schloss Eggenberg is not quite heaven on earth, but the architecture of this exquisite example of Renaissance architecture nonetheless perfectly adheres to the cosmological master plan of its former owner, Prince Hans Ulrich von Eggenberg. Four corner towers precisely mark the respective cardinal points, 365 windows represent the days of the year, 24 state rooms for the hours of a day, and their 52 windows demarcate the weeks. The castle in its current shape was designed by Giovanni Pietro de Pomis and was completed in 1635. It closely resembles El Escorial near Madrid, which inspired the prince to commission the renovations. The beautiful English gardens that surround the castle today were created later. They are perfect for a romantic afternoon stroll but infamous as the current setting of the annual swearing-in ceremony for recruits of Austria’s Federal Armed Forces.
