About

Once the most modern hotel in Graz with such fancy innovations as vacuum cleaners and elevators, Grand Hôtel Wiesler owes its most prominent features—including bay windows specifically built to accommodate writing desks for the guests—to architect Marcel Kammerer, a pupil and collaborator of Vienna Secessionist Otto Wagner. One of the suites that contains such a window is named after Arnold Schwarzenegger, Styria’s most famous son, who is often a guest here. After World War II the hotel provided housing to the officers of the British occupation forces, and it also contained a club and commissary. Part of the hotel also served as a transit point for displaced persons and former concentration camp inmates, many of whom were on their way to Palestine.
