This year, steirischer herbst opens at Karmeliterplatz, a quiet place with deeply buried class and political conflicts. Following the traditional opening speech by director Ekaterina Degot, Julian Warner’s wrestling performance Paradise Lost: Dieser Kampf ist kein Zeichen (This Battle Is No Sign, 2026) takes place here, an exciting staging of the culture wars of our times, during which surprising alliances form.

Following this initial artistic exploration of this year’s themes, we invite you to drinks and music, and then move on to Helmut List Halle, where the day continues with a dance performance by Alex Baczyński-Jenkins.
