GRAZ spielt STEVE REICH – eine Stadt gratuliert zum 90. Geburtstag (GRAZ Plays STEVE REICH: A City Celebrates His Ninetieth Birthday)

US composer Steve Reich, one of the most influential musical thinkers of our time, celebrates his ninetieth birthday on 3 October. To mark this occasion, STUDIO PERCUSSION graz realizes an extraordinary project. The connection between Reich and this ensemble dates back to 1981, when its artistic director, Günter Meinhart, toured with the composer. Since then, Reich’s works have been an integral part of the internationally renowned ensemble’s repertoire.

Over the course of twenty-four hours, works by Reich are performed in twenty program segments at twenty-five locations throughout the city. Around ninety musicians and one extreme athlete create this unique experience, which deliberately moves away from the classical concert hall and transforms the city itself into a stage. GRAZ plays STEVE REICH is a major cultural event that combines musical excellence, urban space, and innovative performance formats, thereby extending far beyond the boundaries of a traditional concert.
