Timber construction is in the spotlight when it comes to making architecture, if not the whole construction industry, more sustainable. Frequently, wood is touted as a carbon-storing, renewable panacea for climate change. But it takes more than just being “made of wood” to be sustainable.

The exhibition Holzbau Architektur mit MENSCH. ORT. HAUS. VERSTAND. holistically examines selected architectures, highlighting which social, cultural, spatial, and structural aspects are necessary to build with wood in a manner that really is environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable.

The exhibition’s first stop was at kunsthaus muerz in 2024; at HDA – Haus der Architektur, it is shown in an updated form. With new thematic emphases, a redesigned exhibition layout, and expanded education formats, it constitutes a standalone version adapted for the HDA.
