Martin Maloney

Martin Maloney presents key works by the pioneering conceptual artist Martin Maloney (1938–2003) for the first time in an institutional context. After settling in New York in 1962, Maloney became closely connected with the formative conceptual art milieu. Yet while his contemporaries became central figures in art history, Maloney gradually wrote himself out of it. By the time of his death, he was only sporadically in touch with the art world.

Rejecting conventional exhibition formats, Maloney increasingly turned to publications and language-based works. His practice persistently questioned the conditions through which art is circulated, exhibited, and remembered. At times polemical, often self-effacing, Maloney’s critique extended beyond institutions to the very mechanisms that produce artistic reputations.

Rather than restoring a forgotten figure, this project—which includes a publication—attends to the gaps that continue to surround Maloney’s work. It also marks the start of Yana Foqué’s program for Grazer Kunstverein.
