Limbo

A singer accompanies herself on the piano. In this situation of absolute vulnerability, she interprets songs about isolation and uncertainty by composers from Ukraine, Germany, China, and Poland. Limbo is the name of this heart-to-heart program by Viktoriia Vitrenko. It is dedicated to her colleague and friend, Maryja Kalesnikava, a Belarusian opposition activist.
Vitrenko and Kalesnikava initiated cultural projects together in Stuttgart until the latter returned to her home country following the protests against the Lukashenko regime. In September 2021, she was sentenced to eleven years in prison for her activism. Last year, Kalesnikava was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz in absentia at ORF musikprotokoll. Limbo shows how deeply war inscribes itself into the political, social, and cultural levels of a society.
