An unofficial Mexican street shop / stall in southeastern Styria acts as a music producer: together with local musical societies, it develops site-specific corridos.
Corridos are one of the most important musical means in Mexico for spreading subversive messages directed against various systems of domination. Contemporary manifestations deal with migration, illegal trade of all kinds, and the everyday lives of disadvantaged groups.
The Styrian corridos will tell of supposed achievements and other local incidents. The songs do not praise “official excluded” subversive themes, but focus on the voices of the decision-makers and deal with current sociopolitical actions.
Thus, the small or big steps by which the welfare state is hollowed out are portrayed from the decision-makers’ perspective as accomplishments. Through musical and literary exaggeration, the official version of a political action or intention is condemned to illegal machinations. Sensitivities do not count.
