24/7. Work between meaning and imbalance (2024), exhibition view, Kunsthaus Graz, photo: Martin Grabner / Kunsthaus Graz
Santiago Sierra’s work examines social and economic injustices and the exploitation of workers, especially migrant workers and the long-term unemployed. The Spanish artist’s provocative and often controversial performances and actions present people from vulnerable groups in extreme situations and aim to break social taboos while raising awareness of political and social injustices.
On 28 September, the last of three performances in which people from an immigrant background spend four hours writing the sentence “I will never steal a job from a European” takes place at Kunsthaus. This declaration, framed and hung in a dense grid referencing the Conceptual Art of Hanne Darboven, subsequently becomes part of the exhibition 24/7.
