This year, the festival starts at the highest and most symbolic point of central Graz—Schloßberg, near the historical clock tower. An imposing monument of a naked soldier stands there, with his back to the wall. Tourists and Grazers do not pay much attention to him, as his aggressive heroism dating to 1932 does not really resonate with contemporary sensibilities. Yet, festival director Ekaterina Degot and artist Lulu Obermayer refer to this demonic figure of the past in a speech and opera performance, respectively. How will he react?
The opening ceremony is divided in two parts, and the first act on Schloßberg is followed by a second one on Mariahilferplatz. You will have enough time to get there on foot by taking the stairs or park road down the hill, or by using the elevator. From the Olympus of cold frightening heroism you will return to the humdrum of everyday life to witness, and become part of, another performance—let’s meet there!
