Humor, satire, and absurdity are synced in Charlotte Gash’s performances. In The Gash Club, she looks into the future yet still delivers a narrative about current events: a descendant of Gash has transformed the Forum Stadtpark basement into an illegal cabaret. The audience and she herself have snuck in to secretly watch one of the monthly performances, hiding from the tyranny of a regime that has banned comedy. Gash’s descendant explains her situation through cardboard props, costumes, and storytelling, eerily comparing it to the past—our present.
Charlotte Gash (1994, Bury St. Edmunds, United Kingdom) is an artist who takes inspiration from humorous everyday situations and works with text, sculpture, performance, and video. Frequently imitating genres and styles from popular culture, she creates characters that deliver a satirical feminist perspective on behavior. Her works were recently shown at Tanzquartier Wien (2024); Belvedere 21, Vienna (2023); Neuer Kunstverein Wien (2023); MAK – Museum für angewandte Kunst, Vienna (2023); Kunstraum Schwaz (2023); and Kunsthalle Wien (2023). Gash lives in Vienna.
