A house floats in Halle Detroit. Here, two independent theater ensembles from Graz have made a pact to tackle the subject of inheritance. Who’s rich? Who is likely to inherit? What would be just, and who will get the house? Between mad rushing and silence, scenes, voices, and bodies overlap. As private matters become embroiled in debates about social justice and the future, all kinds of objects, music, dance, and language fill the space—these too are heirlooms. Next to all the inequality, conflict, and greed lies a farewell. Because inheritance begins with loss.
Theater im Bahnhof (founded in 1989, Graz) is a contemporary people’s theater. Its focus is on researching and writing its own productions for both the stage and public space, questioning Austrian identity between popular culture and tradition. The group is well known for their local engagement in Graz for over thirty years as well as their international performances at festivals such as Theater der Welt, Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Brussels, and Impulse Theater Festival, Düsseldorf/Cologne/Mülheim.
Das Planetenparty Prinzip (founded in 2015, Graz) is a performance collective that develops innovative, contemporary productions in changing constellations and in collaboration with other artists and institutions. Their diverse works take formal and aesthetic risks and embrace new experiences with curiosity, playfulness, and humor. They have been shown at venues including Forum Stadtpark, Graz; Landestheater Linz; LOFFT – DAS THEATER, Leipzig; DAS OFF THEATER, Vienna; Graz Opera; Schauspielhaus Graz; Staatstheater Augsburg; and Theater am Werk, Vienna.
