The BAU basement is a labyrinth with varying associations, much like the entire building. It looks like a bunker or a warren, full of unexpected twists and turns. Once it housed a vast array of vats and tanks for the spirits distilled here. There was also an underground stable with access to the street that has now been closed, as have other parts of the extensive tunnel network that reaches over to several neighboring buildings. In this basement, Gelitin invites visitors on a very special, consciousness-changing trip through an elaborate installation offering a personalized experience, one by one.
The collective Gelitin (founded in 1993, Vienna) consists of Wolfgang Gantner, Ali Janka, Florian Reither, and Tobias Urban. Their projects span a wide range of media—from performance and installation to sculpture and new media—and aim to challenge the conventional relationship between artwork and audience. The collective has recently had solo exhibitions at FOROF, Rome (2024); Palais des Études, Paris (2023); and the Chicago Architecture Biennial (2023), among others, and has participated in numerous group exhibitions and biennials. The members all live in Vienna.
