Voicers—Oratorio for Five Speakers and a Listening Crowd

Libretto from the opening performance of Zorka Wollny at Landhaushof on 19.9.19

Characters (in order of appearance):

Each of the characters tells the crowd (listeners) who they are. They all end the speech with “follow me!” or “Let’s …!”

1. Marek Kalbus:
The proud conservative populist, using we for us; Addressing the pride in people.
He is so full of himself that he has a tendency to go into singing (opera voice).
At some point he sings fragments from the aria Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (The Mastersingers of Nuremberg).

2. Marc Weiser:
He is a bit undecided, he repeats a lot, he likes the words, to chew them, to search for sounds, he gets lost in sounds and forgets about the message.
When he gets back he actually talks reasonably, but then he has a nice exchange of abstract sounds with the drummer and the message is not important again …
Then he suddenly addresses the crowd as soldiers. He then has another exchange with the drummer in a military-industrial manner.

3. Anna Clementi:
Neo-liberal, she is sure everything is just fine. People just need to be patient and believe in the system. She talks in the name of big corporations.

4. Ludwig Obst:
Young angry Austrian, angry slogans, short sentences. Supported by the Brotherhood.

5. Angela Wingerath:
Speaking in the name of the weak, the victims, becoming powerful, appealing to the conscious of the audience. She is the only one who talks to the other characters, she is trying to speak to other characters in the name of the crowd. They ignore her.

6. The choir of twenty man in black shirts. They come in dividing the public in two. They form the line. they just keep the basic dark sound on ‘u’.

Marek:
We, the nation, we the citizens.

Today we are not merely transferring power from one party to another, but we are transferring power and giving it back to you, the people.
The establishment protected itself, but not the citizens. Their victories have not been your victories. Their triumphs have not been your triumphs,
But this moment is your moment — it belongs to you (joker’s smile). This is your day. This is your celebration, and this, is (dangerously) your country!

(warming up the voice)

You you you you you you
the crowd the mass the new big pride the nation the citizens the you you you you you weee?

We, the citizens.
We are one nation.
We share one
heart, one home,
one glorious destiny.

We will confront
hardships, but we will get
the job done.

We will bring back our jobs.
We will bring back our
borders. We will bring back
our wealth, we will bring back
our dreams.
We will build new roads
and highways and bridges and
airports and tunnels, and railways,
all across our wonderful nation.

We will shine
for everyone to follow.
We will be protected by God.
We will not fail.

We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries stealing our companies and destroying our jobs. I will fight for you with every breath in my body.

Marc Weiser:
Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, liebe Gäste, verehrtes Publikum
… Ich darf Sie hiermit recht herzlich willkommen heißen …
… und es freut mich außerordentlich, hier und heute, vor Ihnen stehen zu dürfen. Meine Damen und Herren,
… ich möchte es natürlich nicht versäumen, Sie alle auch im Namen der hier Anwesenden und aller Beteiligten willkommen zu heißen …
Denn ich stehe hier heute Abend vor Ihnen, in meiner Funktion als …
… und ich sage das ohne Eitelkeiten
… Liebe Gäste …
… daher ist es für mich eine ganz besondere Ehre

Die Zeit für die Heilung der Wunden ist gekommen. Der Augenblick ist gekommen, die Kluft, die uns trennt, zu überbrücken. Die Zeit des Aufbaus ist da (abstract sounds).

Wie schön, hier zu sein und zwischen all den Kulturen surfen zu dürfen.
Ich wünsche uns allen heute viele neue Kontakte, anregende Gespräche und viel Spaß beim gemeinsamen Feiern!

Kulturen sind ein permanenter Transit in eine sich ständig neu zusammensetzende Zukunft!

Liebe Freunde, Ihr und ich glauben mehrheitlich daran, dass das, was wir hier tun, sinnvoll und wichtig ist.

(the others make the bit to her song on „das das das das / das das das das”)

Daher ist es auch dankbar, hier vor Ihnen die Rede halten zu dürfen – und nicht woanders!
Ich bin gut drauf.

Die Zahlen sind super, Wachstum gut Arbeitslosigkeit runter, Defizite weniger, Investitionen rauf!
Wir haben Wind in den Segeln. Wir sollten also weiter machen wie bisher. Ihr kennt alle die wichtigen Stichworte: Bankenunion, Sicherheitsunion, digitaler Binnenmarkt.
Erstens: Dazu braucht es mehr Geld

Zweitens: Wir müssen uns alle an die Regeln halten Regeln halten, Regeln halten.

But I’m so happy to be here, what a fantastic team of people who care! I feel so humble to be here.
So I would like to start by telling you about one of my greatest friends.

Marc (high-flying):
Kameraden, Offiziere, Freunde, ich möchte Sie hiermit herzlich willkommen heißen!
Sie alle – Luftwaffe, Marine, Kameraden von den Kontrollstellen, den Spezialeinheiten, demNachrichtendienst, der Kommunikation und Material-Beschaffung, Militärberater – Sie alle – sind täglich im Einsatz, konsequent und mit höchster Präzision. Dafür möchte ich Ihnen hiermit meinen Dank aussprechen. Ein besonderer Dank geht übrigens auch an das weibliche Servicepersonal. Für die vielen Opfer, die Sie alle im täglichen Einsatz bringen, verdienen Sie unseren tiefen Respekt und wir bedanken uns natürlich in besonderem Maße für Ihren unermüdlichen Einsatz für unser Vaterland.
Unser Land ist stolz auf Sie. Auf Sie alle!
Doch die Hauptsache ist, dass wir die Voraussetzungen für den Beginn eines kommenden Friedens-Prozesses geschaffen haben. Das konnte nur durch eine kontinuierliche, positive und konstruktive Zusammenarbeit aller beteiligten Kräfte erreicht werden. Damit ist der Weg zum Frieden gesichert.
Meine Damen und Herren, von diesem Podium spreche ich dem österreichischen Volk mit größter Achtung vor seinen Leistungen den Dank aus.
Danke für Ihren Dienst und Ihr Engagement. Vielen Dank.

Marek:
Everyone is listening to you now. You are the crowd, you are the mass. You came by the tens of millions to become part of a historic movement, the likes of which the world has never seen before.
Your voice, your hopes, and your dreams and your courage will define our destiny.

Ludwig Obst:
Zu lange schon müssen wir zusehen, wie die Politiker unseres Landes ihr eigenes Volk hintergehen. Sie dienen nur noch der Elite. Was ist mit uns? Diese vermeintlichen Volksvertreter haben ihr Volk vergessen.

Wir werden Ihnen zeigen, wo wir unseren Ursprung haben! Wir sind unbeugsame Straßenkämpfer und wir lassen uns nicht mundtot machen! Wir werden siegen. Für unser Land, unsere Kultur und die Zukunft unserer Kinder.

Angela Wingerath (to the crowd):

First of all, I think that it’s important to acknowledge how brave you all have been just in showing up tonight. I think that the fact that you are all here sends a powerful message, which is that people still believe in free speech, democracy, critical thought, and debate.

And we’re all here, at 5:30 pm on a Thursday evening.

You’re also parents worried about your children’s futures. You’re spouses who fear that you or the person you love will lose a job. You’re workers worried about the rising cost of health insurance. You are neighbors. You are friends. You are the citizens who care deeply about this country and its future.

I want to pay my great respect to you. It is you who we need.
I believe deeply in our ability to succeed. I believe deeply in our creativity, in our courage, in our determination. Let us build the movement that says “not in our name”.

(to the other leader)
You are free to share your opinions, you are free to believe whatever you like, whether it’s that the earth is flat, or that cats are great pets, but you don’t have the right to impose those beliefs on others under threat of violence or a jail sentence. You don’t have the right to threaten me, silence me, or criminalize me for telling the truth.

(to the crowd)
You have suffered enough. They burned us in the name of religion, killed us in the name of money, jailed us in the name of nation.

We have not come here to beg world leaders to care (to the other 4): You have ignored us in the past, and you will ignore us again. You have run out of excuses, and we are running out of time. We have come here to let you know that change is coming, whether you like it or not.

Anna Clementi:

Reform and practice tell us: to seek happiness for the people, to seek the revival of the nation. Our party from the people, rooted in the people, for the benefit of the people, serve the people wholeheartedly is the fundamental purpose of the party, must be based on the fundamental interests of the people of all our work is the fundamental starting point and goal, adhere to the People’s Support, agree or disagree, happy with it as the basis for policy development, conform to the people, respect for public opinion, concerned about the people, committed to the people’s livelihood, both by proposing and implementing the correct theory, line, principles and policies to lead the people forward, and from people practice requires the creation and development to get forward momentum, let the people share the fruits of reform, encouraging more people consciously join in the reform and opening up and modernization.

Wenn sich nicht radikal etwas ändert, wird sich die deutsche Rasse selbst auslöschen. Wir holen uns unser Land wieder zurück.

Lügenpresse!
Spricht hier eigentlich noch jemand Deutsch?
Der kann nicht einmal mehr Vaterland auf Deutsch sagen!

Marek:
Blieb sie nicht adlig wie

Was wollt Ihr von den Meistern mehr?

We already have all the facts and solutions. All we have to do is to wake up and change!

If you take this truth seriously, as I do—it is non-negotiable.
If you take it seriously, you use your voice. You fight for it, even if that means you fight alone. As long as we have a voice we must use it.

When you scream, friends, I know you will be heard. And you will be heard now.
